What is an elective Prenatal Ultrasound Scan?
We offer elective 2D, 3D and 4D Prenatal Ultrasound Scan to provide a positive bonding experience for the mother, father and family members with the unborn baby. We feel that realistic surface images provide a connection between the parents and baby that can be beneficial to the whole family. We make no claims that 3-D as used in this examination is performed to better assess the baby for abnormalities. A routine ultrasound examination should have already been performed to assess the gestational age of the fetus and to evaluate for fetal anomalies as well as the basic components of fetal anatomy recommended for screening.
What is the differences between 2D, 3D and 4D Scan?
Some parent may feel confuse about the differences of 2D,3D and 4D Scan. It is important to make it clear that 3D and 4D ultrasound is exactly the same technology as the conventional 2D ultrasound that everybody is seen at the hospital.
The 2D conventional or ‘standard’ ultrasound scan gives an image in two dimensions. 3D Ultrasound Scan, as the name suggests, gives a three-dimensional image. However, as is the convention, 3D describes a static image. With this technological development, you can see the baby in 3D and see the motion as well. It is the motion that is described as the fourth dimension hence the term 4D.
In other words, you can see your baby in three dimensions and see all the action taking place in the womb. The 3D baby scan can then be given any colour but in most cases is given a golden hue as it is regarded to be the most aesthetically pleasing. Compared with the traditional 2D scanning the new 4D scanning technology gives you more insight into what is happening within the mother’s womb. With the 4D baby ultrasound scans you are able to see the fetus in extraordinary lifelike detail, especially in the later stages of pregnancy when you can see the fetus behave in a similar manner to a newborn baby. With 3D and 4D baby ultrasound scan technology you can see the fetus smile, yawn, suck on his or her fingers, scratch his or her nose and exhibit many other behaviors of a newborn baby.
What is the differences between 2D Growth Scan and 2D Details Scan?
2D Growth Scan also named as Fetal Wellbeing Scan. The purpose of a Fetal Wellbeing Scan or Growth Scan is to determine the growth and health of the baby. This scan includes measurements of the baby’s head, abdominal circumference and femur (thigh bone). Evaluation of the placental position, fetal movements and the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby will also be undertaken. If necessary, we will assess the blood flow through the umbilical cord. Calculations will be made to assess the growth of the baby according to the gestation and will provide an estimation of the baby’s weight
2D Details Scan also named as Fetal Anomaly Scan. The main purpose of Fetal Anomaly Scans or 2D Details Scan is to check your baby’s anatomy for normality. Fetal Anomaly Scans are important because it provides the best opportunity to examine all the anatomy of your baby in great detail. The Fetal Anomaly Scan can be performed at between 18 – 24 weeks although it is normally performed at 20 weeks.
The reason an anomaly scan isn't performed earlier in the pregnancy is because your baby's internal organs are not fully formed and after 24 weeks a full anatomical examination may not be possible because the baby will often be in a difficult position. It can detect 70-80% physical anomaly but could not detect chromosome anomaly such as Down syndrome. Chromosome anomaly only scan be detected accurately thru amniocentesis or chronic villus sampling (CVS) test. Please bear in mind that only 2D details scan can detect the physical anomaly of the baby while 4D scan only can give you a chance to look at your baby in motion and it might detect the cleft lips as we are more focusing on baby face structure during the 4D Ultrasound Scan.
What is the optimal time of the pregnancy to have a 3D/4D Ultrasound Scan?
If you plan on having only one 3D/4D ultrasound examination, we would recommend having the 3D/4D Ultrasound Scan performed between the 20th and 38th week of the pregnancy. However, excellent images of your baby can be obtained anytime from 16 weeks of pregnancy. Due to us specialising in this field and after many years of perfecting this industry we have found that the best stages are between 22-25 and 26-30 weeks. Many mothers obtain more than one 3D/4D Ultrasound Scan and have images to enjoy from their second and third trimesters. Please ask about our packages if you would like to capture memories of your baby in different stages.
There are 3 stages you can perform 3D/4D Ultrasound Scan on your baby:
1) During 22th - 25th week of your pregnancy: -You can look at your baby movement during this stage whereby more movement can be seen in this stage. During this stage, your baby might look a bit skinny but your baby look cute and most probably you had chance to look for whole body of the baby which including hands and leg scan.
2) During 26th - 30th week of your pregnancy: - - During the stage, your baby will be look chubbier. We might focus more to your baby face whereby leg and hands scan will be hard to scan which depend on your amniotic fluid level. If your amniotic fluid level is high, most probably you have chance to look for baby hand and legs.
3) During 31th - 40th week of your pregnancy : - - During this stage the scan will be harder due to the space for scan is limited. It depends on the amniotic fluid level, if your amniotic fluid level is adequate which we need a layer of amniotic fluid to capture your baby face. Success rate will be 70-80%. Hence, you might have a try to scan your baby at our place which we offer FREE scan if we fail to capture your baby face limited to certain area only. (Please check the place that provide FREE SCAN when you do online booking).
Does this take the place of an Ultrasound at my doctor's office?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! Women seeking an elective prenatal ultrasound with our facility must already be receiving treatment with a healthcare provider for prenatal care and have already undergone a medical, diagnostic ultrasound ordered by their provider to confirm their due date, screen for fetal anomalies, and to look for any other pregnancy related issues. The issues that we are evaluating in the elective prenatal ultrasound session include a limited diagnostic scan to confirm heartbeat, the number of babies in the pregnancy and the position of the baby. Please note, at no time is this exam to be used in place of a complete diagnostic ultrasound.
Is it safe? Are there any risks to me, or my baby?
Extensive studies for over 30 years have found that ultrasound has not been shown to cause any harm to mother or baby. Routine scanning of all pregnancies is now normal throughout Malaysia. In 3D/4D scanning exactly the same type and intensity of ultrasound is used as with conventional 2D scanning. 3D and 4D Ultrasound Scan both utilizes sound waves to look inside the body. The technology is similar to radar. A probe placed on the body emits sound waves into the body, listens for the return echo and generates an image. 4D Ultrasound Scan will be similar to a conventional scan in terms of exposure.
Will I always get a beautiful picture of my baby?
Usually, you will get a beautiful 3D picture of your baby but not always. Sometimes if the baby is persistently looking face down, i.e. towards your spine it may be difficult to see the baby's face. If your amniotic fluid level is low, then we could not get a good picture as you have seen in our picture gallery. The lower the amniotic fluid level, it will be hard to get a beautiful baby picture. Pregnant mum’s adipose fat tissue layer light also affected the quality of the scan. The thicker the tissue layer, it will be lower the penetration of the ultrasound. If there is something blocking the front view of the baby faces such as umbilical cord, placenta or uterus wall, we could not get you a good image.
If this happens or if we could only get you a few pictures, may be 1 to 2 images, we will charge you half of the price only. We offer FREE SCAN if we fail to capture your baby face! We make no promise that the images will be the same as our gallery images, or you might have seen at elsewhere or even from our clinic. We use different ultrasound technology in different clinic and different sonographer at different clinic. Every baby scans differently; depending on the baby’s gestational age, position and amount of fluid or mother’s conditions. We promise to make our best effort to obtain the best possible images of whatever parts of the baby that can be seen.
How long does the 4D Ultrasound Scan take?
Depending on the package you choose, normally the 4D Ultrasound Scan session will last for 20 minutes. However it is still depending on your baby cooperation. If your baby willing the show the face, it might reduce the scanning time, if your baby does not cooperate well it might increase the scanning time.
Who will be performing the 4D Ultrasound Scan?
Only a certified and well trained Sonographer will be allowed to perform the 4D Ultrasound Scan for our customer.
Are 3D/4D Ultrasound Scan able to tell the sex of the baby?
Yes, in most cases we can provide an indication of the sex of the baby. In 3D/4D Ultrasound Scan, the baby’s gender sometimes does not appear prominent. But the baby’s gender can be confirmed more accurately in 2D Ultrasound Scan. Suggested week for gender scan will be 22th week and above. However, we make no promise to tell the sex of the baby, depending on the cooperation during scanning session. Certain factors such as body tissue content, developmental stage and fetal position will affect us to determine baby’s gender.
What if I don't wish to know the gender of my baby?
We want this to be a fantastic experience for you so don’t be shy to ask questions or give your comment and feedback. If you don’t want to know tell us, we'd hate to spoil it for you. The sonographer will base the majority of your scan around the facial features so it is not possible for you to see the sex at all.
Can I bring my family and friends?
Yes, you are allowed to invite family member and friends for your 3D/4D Ultrasound Scan. In fact, we encourage our clients to invite family and friends to attend the elective 3D/4D Ultrasound Scan session. This is a joyous and wonderful experience, one that can be shared with your family and loved ones.
Do I need a full bladder?
No, however we do need you to be WELL hydrated as this will giver you clearer images. You will need to drink at least 1 litre of water each day before your appointment as this will clear out your amniotic fluid again which will give you clearer images. It is best to start doing this 1-2 weeks before your booked appointment.
